Former Kogarah councillors have been left disappointed and frustrated after the State Government overruled amendments made to the Kogarah new city plan.
The state government gazetted the Kogarah new city plan last month but with significant changes to height limits.
The proposed plan had been approved by Kogarah Council in April last year with reduced heights in Blakehurst, Carlton and South Hurstville.
Those changes were overridden by the state government with the Department of Planning reinstating building heights.
In a letter to Georges River Council the Department of Planning said the changes made by council weren’t supported or included because of a lack of evidence and because they would require re-exhibition of the LEP.
Former Labor councillor Nick Katris called that explanation a furphy.
He said the department of planning had plenty of time both before and after the gateway determination to advise council that any changes would mean a re-exhibition.
He said most councillors voted to put the original proposal out on exhibition in 2014 because of density targets identified as part of the Sydney Metropolitan Strategy.
He said the worry was that if council did not put out the plan then the decision would be made for them.
‘’If we’re being accused of letting it go out in that form then they shouldn’t have let it go out in that form,’’ he said. Read the rest of this entry »

LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY
NOTICE OF MOTION
Chris Minns MP says –
Madam SPEAKER
I give notice that on the next sitting day I will move that this House notes that:
1) This house condemns the Minister for Planning for his arrogant decision to reverse the will of the people and impose 7 storey buildings in 1 and 2 storey residential streets.
2) Notes that this decision was taken while the democratically elected Councils of St George were sacked.
3) That his Statement that the community where “exhaustivley consulted” is obviously his attempt at morbid black humour.
4) Calls on St George Liberals to repudiate this arrogant Minister and instead stand with the people of St George.
Signed: Chris Minns
Member for Kogarah

More of this: The Kogarah new city plan has been adopted which will see building heights increase across the area. Picture: Jane Dyson
The state government has approved the Kogarah new city plan but with significant changes to height limits.
The plan has been years in the making and was fiercely opposed by residents who raised concerns that the changes would see the area over-developed and lose its character.
Under the proposed plan building heights of up to 39 metres were recommended for the Kogarah Town Centre.
Heights were also increased in parts of Allawah, Beverley Park, Blakehurst, Carlton, Hurstville, Oatley, Kogarah, Sans Souci and South Hurstville.
The plan was adopted by council during a meeting in April last year with significant amendments made to reduce heights in Blakehurst, Carlton and South Hurstville after backlash from the community.
Those changes were overridden by the state government when the plan was officially gazetted late last week. Read the rest of this entry »
